Visit History

Discover history everywhere. Remember every visit.

Visit History was born from a simple idea: keeping track of the amazing historic sites we'd visited. Too often, we struggled to remember when - or even if - we'd been to a particular castle or stately home.

From there, Visit History grew into something more. Wouldn't it be great to see all the sites in one app, mapped out and searchable by distance or name?

What you'll find

  • Over 400,000 historical sites from the National Heritage List for England, managed by Historic England - listed buildings, scheduled monuments, battlefields, wrecks, and more
  • Sites managed by national organisations, based on publicly available data
  • Featured sites curated by us and our community
  • Your personal history: the places you've visited and the ones on your wishlist

The National Heritage List for England

The National Heritage List for England (NHLE) is the only official, up to date register of all nationally protected historic buildings and sites in England.

It contains over 400,000 sites over the several categories:

  • Listed buildings
  • Scheduled monuments
  • Registered parks and gardens
  • Registered battlefields
  • World Heritage Sites (WHS)

Sites managed by national organisations

Whilst not affiliated with any other organisation, we have curated publicly available data for around 1,200 sites managed by English Heritage, National Trust and Historic Houses with more to be added soon.

Whilst each organisation's individual app has amazing benefits, it can be difficult to get the complete picture of all the historic sites around you without looking at several apps simultaneously. Visit History aims to be a companion app, helping you to get the best out of all the historic sites whoever manages them.

There are also a small but growing number of featured sites suggested by our users and curated by us. Why not suggest your favourite historic site, museum or place of interest?

Map overlays

Visit History offers four map overlays to help you explore historic sites in a whole new way.

  • OpenStreetMap — The default view. A detailed, community-built map showing roads, landmarks, and place names.
  • Satellite — Aerial imagery from Esri World Imagery, giving you a real-world view of the landscape around each site.
  • LiDAR DSM — Digital Surface Model. A laser-scanned elevation map of England that captures everything on the ground, including trees, buildings, and structures. Often reveals earthworks and features invisible to the naked eye.
  • LiDAR DTM — Digital Terrain Model. Similar to the DSM but with surface objects stripped away, showing only the bare ground. Ideal for spotting subtle archaeological features like ditches, banks, and buried remains.

LiDAR data is provided for England by the Environment Agency at 1 metre resolution and is particularly powerful when exploring scheduled monuments and earthwork sites.
